March 2013 – Myanmar President Makes Historic Trip to Australia


In the first visit to Australia by a Myanmar head of state since 1974, President Thein Sein held talks on March 18 with officials in Canberra.  Australia is set to boost defence and trade ties and also pledged an additional $20-million of assistance as part of its aid programme.  Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard also announced a trade commissioner would be posted to Yangon and praised the extraordinary progress towards democracy of Myanmar.
